METZ Task Manager
In case you didn't already know, METZ Task Manager can be accessed
at any time by simply pressing Ctrl Escape. You can also choose
the Switch To... menu item from any applications system menu, or
double click the mouse on the Windows background to access METZ Task
Manager as well.
You may find it easier to use the help system with METZ Task Manager
by choosing the Stay visible checkbox from File - Preferences -
Task Manager dialog.
METZ Task Manager 2.1
Task Manager version 2.1 is an update to add a few features and
several important changes as a result of requests and technical
support questions from our users. The Task Manager Help files have
been updated to reflect most of these changes.
More Launch Buttons! Our most popular request has been to expand
the launch pad buttons. So, we have replaced the 6 windows arrangement
buttons with Launch buttons. If you wish to restore the windows
arrangement buttons, see the METZ.INI settings below.
Task Manager Preferences - Unload from memory when Inactive -- this
option will automatically remove METZ Task Manager from memory when not
in use. This makes additional free resources and memory available
to Windows which are critical when you are running large applications.
The only disadvantage is that Task Manager will take a little extra
time to load itself each time you use it.
Norton Desktop Group Support - The Task Manager File - Preferences
- Group List dialog allows you to choose Norton Desktop Groups.
It takes a moment to access the Norton Groups when this option is
first selected, but once the groups are processed, Task Manager will
load the groups much faster than Norton Desktop.
Central Point Desktop Group Support - The Task Manager File -
Preferences - Group List dialog allows you to choose the Central
Point Desktop Groups. This option only loads the icons and list of
the top level groups at this time. So you need to open every group
you want listed before choosing this option. We are currently
investigating adding support for the sub-groups.
New Shell options - The Task Manager Preferences Dialog now
includes Shell Options. Emulate Progman causes Task Manager to act
just like the Windows Program Manager when it is the shell. If
this option is selected and an application is run non-minimized when
Windows is started, METZ Task Manager will appear as an icon. Otherwise,
it will appear normally.
The Appear Normal and Appear Minimized selections allow you to
override this action causing Task Manager to appear accordingly
regardless of the Load or Run lines in the WIN.INI or the Progman
Startup group contents.
METZ Launch Dialog - This dialog lets you configure individual
items on your Launch pad and Launch menu. We have added the ability
to change the icons, which is especially important when using DOS
applications. When launching a DOS application, it will be assigned
the icon you have chosen. Under Windows 3.1, the file MORICONS.DLL
and PROGMAN.EXE contain quite a few icons for you to choose from.
Remember, a right mouse click lets you configure individual Launch
Pad buttons. By the way, right mouse clicks are supported on the
Task List, Group List and Quick File Manager file list.
Screen Saver Stay On Top Option - If you have Windows 3.1,
the Task Manager Screen Saver can be set to Stay on Top. This will
hide other smaller Windows that may have a similar Stay on Top
feature.
PC Tools for Windows
METZCPTM is a utility which enables METZ Task Manager under Central
Point PC Tools 1.0 for Windows. METZCPTM is included with the Task Manager
Utility Pack disk and is available for download from our CompuServe and
America Online forums. METZCPTM is not necessary for PC Tools 2.0.
Norton Desktop 2.x
Norton Desktop 2.0 & 2.1 causes a UAE when submenus are attached
to the METZ Launch Menu. If you are using Norton Desktop 2.0 or 2.1,
add the following statement to the [METZ Launch Menu] section of the
METZ.INI file:
[METZ Launch Menu]
NDW Popups=FALSE
METZ.INI
The METZ.INI file contains the various settings for METZ
Software products. Following are the undocumented INI values
for METZ Task Manager which you may find useful.
[METZ Task Manager]
Detect=No
ExpandLaunchPad=TRUE
[Quick Tools]
FileMgr Source=
FileMgr Save Source=No
[METZ Screen Saver]
RestoreDosBoxes=No
[METZ]
DateApp=control.exe
CDROM=
OMNIBOOK=
Detect - Setting this value to Yes will cause the Task Manager Run List
to update automatically, whenever any application is launched,
no matter how it is launched! For example, if you were to run
NOTEPAD.EXE from Program Manager, NOTEPAD.EXE will automatically
be added to your Task Manager Run list. Task Manager does need
to be loaded of course. This option is experimental.
ExpandLaunchPad - if you prefer the old Windows arrangement buttons over
the extra launch pad buttons, set this value to FALSE and restart
Windows. The Launch Pad will be reduced to to 9 buttons and
the Windows arrangement buttons will reappear.
FileMgr Source - Set this value to the directory path you would like
the Task Manager Quick File Manager to use as its default.
Normally, the Quick File Manager uses the current directory.
FileMgr Save Source - Set this value to Yes and the Quick File Manager
will remember the Source Path. This option overrides the
FileMgr Source setting.
RestoreDosBoxes - This will cause the Screen Saver to reactivate a
DOS icon back to a full screen Application when you exit
the screen saver. By default, DOS icons are not activated.
DateApp - This option determines what application is launched when
you double click on the Date or Time display at the bottom
of the Task Manager screen. The default is the Windows
control panel (CONTROL.EXE).
If you want the control panel to open up into the Date/Time
dialog, use "DateApp=control.exe DATE/TIME".
CDROM - If your CD ROM drive is not appearing as a CD ROM drive on
the system status dialog. It can be corrected with this
setting. Simply list the drive letters that apply. For
example, to make drives F & G to appear as CD ROM drives
use CDROM=FG
OMNIBOOK - If you have an HP OmniBook, set this value to OMNIBOOK=Y
for better support of Windows in ROM.
METZKW.SYS
1. Using the METZ Task Manager's Screen Saver with Non-Windows
Applications.
If you use the METZ Task Manager's Screen Saver feature and
run DOS applications under Microsoft Windows, and are having
problems with the Screen Saver activating while you are working
in the DOS window, make sure that METZKW.SYS is installed in your
CONFIG.SYS file. This driver (METZKW.SYS) detects activity in
your DOS application, and supports DOS Hotkeys you have defined
in your METZ applications. Your CONFIG.SYS file should contain
a line reading:
device=c:\windows\system\metzkw.sys (or the appropriate path)
You can verify proper installation by checking the System
Status dialog in METZ Task Manager. A line stating "METZKW is present"
will appear in the list of General information if METZKW.SYS is
correctly installed. Don't forget to reboot if you have just
made the changes to your CONFIG.SYS file.
2. Technical Information about METZKW.SYS.
METZKW.SYS uses less than 2K of memory.
METZKW.SYS can be loaded high.
METZKW.SYS has the following optional parameters:
/NOCAD - disables CTRL-ALT-DEL at the DOS level.
/NOMAT - disables mouse tracking, should there be a conflict
If you were to add both options to your CONFIG.SYS, they would
appear as follows:
device=c:\windows\system\metzkw.sys /NOCAD /NOMAT
3. Using METZKW.COM instead of METZKW.SYS.
If you find that the keyboard activity is not being detected
while running DOS applications under Windows, it may be necessary
to use the METZKW.COM version of METZKW.SYS because of a few
drivers that interfere with the operation of METZKW.SYS.
Running METZKW.COM in your AUTOEXEC.BAT after these drivers are
loaded, and before Windows is run, will eliminate the problem.
The DOS KEYB command and some network drivers affect METZKW.SYS.
Both METZKW.SYS and METZKW.COM are on the installation diskette.
4. Technical Information about METZKW.COM
METZKW.COM supports the additional parameter:
/UNLOAD - unloads METZKW.COM from memory unless the mouse driver
has been loaded after METZKW was loaded.
